The 23rd Black & White Sale held at Borderway, Carlisle (5th December) attracted one of the largest crowds ever seen at the event. Europe’s most prestigious dairy cattle sale featured bidders from across the UK, Ireland, mainland Europe and North America, as purchasers were offered the very best dairy genetics from nine counties.
Top price at the sale went to Shanael Minister Golden, consigned by the Miller family, Shanael Holsteins, Evesham. Golden sold for 10,000gns to Peter Prior, Designer Holsteins, Nortons, Radley Green, Essex. This outstanding 10 month old calf was also awarded the best turned out animal in the sale parade the previous evening by event judge Bruce Jobson. Born in February 2009, she is sired by Mr Minister from a VG89 Picston Shottle dam and sold with AI interest from several leading genetic companies.
Second top price went to Willsbro Howie Lila Z, consigned by Willsbro Holsteins, Cornwall. A Kerndtway Howie granddaughter out of the All Canadian Lylehaven Lila Z EX94, she sold for 9,000gns and joins the herd of B. Mckiken, Ernespie, Castle Douglas. This heifer has created interest from all over Europe and sold with over £7,000 in embryo and bull contracts.
The famous Overside herd owned by the Neilson family, Lanarkshire, took third place in the price leader board at 8000gns with Overside Goldwyn A Amanda. This fancy Braedale Goldwyn daughter is descended from the world renowned DRA August family. Her nearest seven dams are all scored Excellent and this 10 month old stylish heifer was purchased by K&M Jamieson, Woodhead, Annan.
The hottest Picston Shottle daughter in the sale was a member of the famous Marie family from the Denmire herd, owned by the Dennison family, Cumbria. Her dam is Denmire Gibson Marie 22 EX91, a former Royal Welsh show Champion; her next four dams are scored Excellent 94 with all over 100 tonnes of lifetime production. She now joins the Ballycrochan herd of Aubrey Patterson, Bangor, Co. Down for 7,500gns.
The Denmire herd continued an impressive sale run with a very classy Braedale Goldwyn daughter descended from nine consecutive Excellent scored dams and dates back to the “Queen of the Breed” Glenridge Citation Roxy EX97. This beautiful young calf now joins the herd of C.S.A Brassington & Son, Shorpshire, for 6,500gns.
Top price heifer calf from mainland Europe went to Markwell-CBS Advent Reflection-Red consigned by Karl Rutten, Belgium. She was sired by KHW Kite Advent-Red from the first ever Red member of the Raven family to classify Excellent. She sold for 6,500gns to the Miller family, Shanael Holsteins, Evesham.
Also selling for 6,500gns was Skye Hot Jodie RC consigned by Willy & Jo Templeton, Ayrshire. Jodie is sired by Dudoc Mr Burns, and is a grand-daughter of Fradon Rudolph Jodie EX, one of hottest Red bloodlines in North America. She sold with bull contracts to Semex and Cogent and was purchased by a syndicate of breeders from Ayrshire, Messrs Bryson, DG Morgan & AD Hughes and J Craig.
The first ever vehicle registration number plate offered at the event sold for 1,100gns to Colin Laird, Blythbridge Farms, Edinburgh. Registration number, “B19 MLK” (BIG MILK) featured as the first lot of the day and helped further create the unique atmosphere at Borderway according to Head Pedigree Auctioneer Glyn Lucas.
“We had the biggest ever crowd at the event and the atmosphere was sensational throughout the day. However, I’d like to congratulate all the consignors on offering cattle descended from many of the world’s greatest cow families and helping to further maintain the event’s reputation as Europe’s premier dairy cattle sale,” he said.
