GOLDEN MOMENT AT BORDERWAY BLACK AND WHITE SALE

The 23rd Black & White Sale held at Borderway, Carlisle (5th December) attracted one of the largest crowds ever seen at the event. Europe’s most prestigious dairy cattle sale featured bidders from across the UK, Ireland, mainland Europe and North America, as purchasers were offered the very best dairy genetics from nine counties.

Top price at the sale went to Shanael Minister Golden, consigned by the Miller family, Shanael Holsteins, Evesham. Golden sold for 10,000gns to Peter Prior, Designer Holsteins, Nortons, Radley Green, Essex. This outstanding 10 month old calf was also awarded the best turned out animal in the sale parade the previous evening by event judge Bruce Jobson. Born in February 2009, she is sired by Mr Minister from a VG89 Picston Shottle dam and sold with AI interest from several leading genetic companies.

Second top price went to Willsbro Howie Lila Z, consigned by Willsbro Holsteins, Cornwall. A Kerndtway Howie granddaughter out of the All Canadian Lylehaven Lila Z EX94, she sold for 9,000gns and joins the herd of B. Mckiken, Ernespie, Castle Douglas. This heifer has created interest from all over Europe and sold with over £7,000 in embryo and bull contracts.

The famous Overside herd owned by the Neilson family, Lanarkshire, took third place in the price leader board at 8000gns with Overside Goldwyn A Amanda. This fancy Braedale Goldwyn daughter is descended from the world renowned DRA August family. Her nearest seven dams are all scored Excellent and this 10 month old stylish heifer was purchased by K&M Jamieson, Woodhead, Annan.

The hottest Picston Shottle daughter in the sale was a member of the famous Marie family from the Denmire herd, owned by the Dennison family, Cumbria. Her dam is Denmire Gibson Marie 22 EX91, a former Royal Welsh show Champion; her next four dams are scored Excellent 94 with all over 100 tonnes of lifetime production. She now joins the Ballycrochan herd of Aubrey Patterson, Bangor, Co. Down for 7,500gns.

The Denmire herd continued an impressive sale run with a very classy Braedale Goldwyn daughter descended from nine consecutive Excellent scored dams and dates back to the “Queen of the Breed” Glenridge Citation Roxy EX97. This beautiful young calf now joins the herd of C.S.A Brassington & Son, Shorpshire, for 6,500gns.

Top price heifer calf from mainland Europe went to Markwell-CBS Advent Reflection-Red consigned by Karl Rutten, Belgium. She was sired by KHW Kite Advent-Red from the first ever Red member of the Raven family to classify Excellent. She sold for 6,500gns to the Miller family, Shanael Holsteins, Evesham.

Also selling for 6,500gns was Skye Hot Jodie RC consigned by Willy & Jo Templeton, Ayrshire. Jodie is sired by Dudoc Mr Burns, and is a grand-daughter of Fradon Rudolph Jodie EX, one of hottest Red bloodlines in North America. She sold with bull contracts to Semex and Cogent and was purchased by a syndicate of breeders from Ayrshire, Messrs Bryson, DG Morgan & AD Hughes and J Craig.

The first ever vehicle registration number plate offered at the event sold for 1,100gns to Colin Laird, Blythbridge Farms, Edinburgh. Registration number, “B19 MLK” (BIG MILK) featured as the first lot of the day and helped further create the unique atmosphere at Borderway according to Head Pedigree Auctioneer Glyn Lucas.

“We had the biggest ever crowd at the event and the atmosphere was sensational throughout the day. However, I’d like to congratulate all the consignors on offering cattle descended from many of the world’s greatest cow families and helping to further maintain the event’s reputation as Europe’s premier dairy cattle sale,” he said.

HOLSTEIN UK’S CELEBRATION SALE SEES FIVE, FIVE FIGURE BIDS UP TO 18500 GNS

What a day in the life of Holstein UK, especially for its members who consigned heifers to the ‘Sale For The Century’ which is just part of the Centenary Celebrations for Holstein UK. A huge crowd from all corners of the country turned up in droves to witness what was expected to be an exciting days trading at Wright Manley’s noted Livestock Market at Beeston Castle, Cheshire.
All the cattle had been preselected for the sale and as a group they were a quite outstanding offering of cattle of the highest order. The sale was led by a beautiful in-calf heifer from the noted Sterndale Herd of Bill Nadin at Earl Sterndale, Buxton; Sterndale Ashlyns Gold had everything. She is daughter of Braedale Goldwyn and a grand daughter of the 2004 Champion animal at World Dairy Expo, USA and Canada’s Royal Winter Fair, Tri-day Ashlyn (Ex96-2E). She also has a PLI of +£232, the highest in the sale. This March calving heifer was the choice of Geoff Lewis of Lewis Pearson Ltd of St.Brides, Nr. Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.
Next in the price list was one of the youngest calves in the sale; Holmland A Goldwyn Pledge, another daughter of Goldwyn with a PLI of+£167 consigned by Steve Bell and Graham Kirby of Cumbria. This February born calf is from the famous Pala/Promise/Pledge line at Windy-Knoll-View Farms in the USA and was sold for 12000 gns to Simon Hesketh of Harrogate, North Yorkshire for his Merrydale Herd.
Two animals sold for 10000 gns each. The first was another from the Sterndale stable; Sterndale Ruby Tuesday ET is a Sep 07 daughter of Advent Red bred from six generations of Excellent cows, the grand dam being the famous former red and white grand champion at World Dairy Expo, Lavender Ruby Redrose EX96-2E. She Sold to John Jamieson for his herd at Ruthwell, Dumfries. Also selling at this figure was the second youngest calf in the sale, Huddlesford Golden Paradise from Tom and Andy Cope’s noted Staffordshire based herd. Another daughter of Goldwyn and a great grand daughter of the famous Vandyk-k Integrity Paradise (EX96-2E) this three month old calf sold to Mr. Frank Phillipson of Ulverston, Cumbria.
The final lot at 10000 gns was one of First Choice lots. Ian and Kenny Watson of Coleraine, Co Londonderry were offering the first choice heifer calf from seven pregnancies sired by Sanchez, Alexander, Million and Planet out of two full sisters sired by Shottle who are grand daughters of the world renowned Savage-Leigh Licorice EX92-2E. The final bid on this package was made by Distinctive Holsteins of Middlewich.
Two animals sold at 9000 gns; Picston Shottle Shula 58th ET from the Pickford family of Stone is a fifteen month old daughter of Shottle from their famous Sharon family who sold to the Willsbro Herd in Cornwall and at the same price Richard Atkin of Yatehouse Holsteins, Middlewich purchased Aintree Advent Rae Red from Richard and Ruth Pilkington’s noted Aintree Herd.
The only other animal over 8000 gns was the beautiful Skyhigh Talented Pat ET *RC from Mark Shadwick of Carlisle from a great line of high production long living cows from the Moondale Pat family. She now joins the Winton Herd of Peter Waring at Beverley, East Yorkshire.
A package of 6 embryos by mutually agreeable sire out of the Number 1 CTPI Cow in the breed Wabash-Way Emilyann (VG88-2yr) sold for 2500 gns to Diamond Genetics of Holland.

Irish Dairy Farmers: World Leaders in Cattle Breeding

Irish dairy farmers are world leaders in cattle breeding. The key genomes affecting milk production and fertility have been identified by Irish geneticists.

This year’s crop of calves entering cattle breeding stations around the country have been short-listed in part using gene testing with only the most promising being selected for progeny testing. Six spring-born bull calves from the herd of Paddy O’Leary, Conna, Fermoy were genomically selected as potential recruits for Ireland’s cattle breeding industry.

The O’Leary family will host a major Open Day on their farm, as members of the winning group in the ACCBank EBI Discussion Group competition, on Tuesday, 8 September 2009.

"Dairy farmers have been quick to adopt this technology. This year, just months after the technology was developed, genomically selected bulls accounted for one-third of the AI used on Irish dairy farms," said Andrew Cromie, Irish Cattle Breeding Federation. Continuing he said, "Nowhere else in the world has gene testing been so widely adopted as by Irish dairy farmers. Two-thirds of the calves to be born in the herds of the winning Blackwater Discussion Group next spring will have been sired by this new generation of genomically selected AI bulls."

Teagasc Dairy Programme Manager, Matt Ryan said, "Farmers can double the rate of genetic improvement in their dairy herds by using bulls selected with this technology. Our target of an annual herd EBI increase of €5 can now double to €10 per year. If achieved, this herd EBI increase is worth €36 million annually to Irish dairy farmers."

Genomics Testing available

One of the hottest and most innovative instruments in today’s Holstein Breeding industry is undoubtedly Genomic Testing.

On the basis of the DNA analysis, the genomic breeding value can be found from an animal at an early age, proving invaluable in successfully marketing key animals and their progeny.

North America is leading the way in this field, the AI stations which funded the research and financially supported the scientific development possess a 5 year long exclusivity right to the full genomic testing of male animals. However the Holstein Association of the USA - whom are an independent breeding federation for the USA are allowed to carry out Genomic testing on females.

In co-operation with Holstein Association USA, Eurogenes offers European Holstein Breeders the opportunity to have females genomically tested, by hair sample.

Costs-
The following should be used as a guide for calculating costs:
-DNA analysis US$250
-Administration/testing handling US$100

-Holstein Association USA registration charges
Calf under 3 months US$24
Calf 3-6 months US$30
Heifer 6-12 months US$40
Heifer 12-24 months US$60
Older than 24 months US$100

Please note all prices are quoted in US dollars, based on today’s exchange rates (21/08/09) the price would vary between £225- £271 (depending on the age at registration)

The American TPI index is calculated by doing a Genomic Marker test which is performed on the hair sample you provide, we also need a copy of the Holstein UK pedigree to be sent with the sample.

Please if you want to have animals included in the next run, send we must receive the details and hair samples by 30th August at the latest.

Kerry has Baileys cream

Kerry showed it had prowess in dairy cattle breeding and not just on the football field when it scooped first prize in the 26th Baileys Champion Dairy Cow competition.
The country's most coveted prize went to Kerry breeder John Kirby, from Listowel, for his cow Smearlaview Forbidden Vixan which was first placed in the competition at Virginia Show on Wednesday.
John took home the Virginia Milk Products trophy today as well as the €2,000 cash prize and the Best Exhibitor Bred title, beating off competition from Ireland's finest.
A total of 27 dairy cows from all over Ireland qualified for this year's competition, proving their credentials by having produced 1,500 gallons of milk.
Kilwarden Gibson Vixan, owned by Brochan Cocoman from Kill, Co Kildare, was declared Reserve Champion. R Whelan and E Kelly from Clonard in Co Meath took the Best Dry Cow title with Lumville Danoise 2, who also won the Highest Protein Content award.
Monomore Durham Raven, owned by Thomas Kelly from Drogheda, Co Louth, was declared Best EBI and Jerome Smith from Kilnaleck, Co Cavan, took the Best Heifer in Milk prize for Dalevalley OTI Ebony.
The €8,000 prize contest which is sponsored by Baileys and its cream supplier Glanbia Ingredients was as ever a tough one. This year's judge, John Gribbon of Holstein UK, said: "It is an honour to judge the best cow in Ireland and these winners could successfully compete anywhere in the world."
